Professor Peng Bo, a renowned clinical expert in Chinese medicine, obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in integrated Western and Chinese medicine from Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, and currently serves as Professor of Practice at the School of Chinese Medicine of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Born into a distinguished family of Chinese medicine practitioners, Professor Peng inherited his family’s medical knowledge at an early age and later studied under a variety of mentors, achieving a remarkable synthesis of Chinese and Western medicine. With more than three decades of experience in the clinical practice, teaching, and research of Chinese medicine, he has developed a particular expertise in geriatric medicine and complex internal disorders.
Regarding his academic research, Professor Peng focuses on vascular health, airway health, delaying ageing (longevity studies), and emerging respiratory infectious diseases, with a particular focus on geriatric diseases. He believes that Chinese medicine, with its long history, has accumulated profound theoretical knowledge and practical experience in addressing ageing and maintaining wellness, health and longevity for the elderly, making it an invaluable intellectual heritage for humanity. He advocates for the Chinese medicine health concept of “fulfilling one’s natural lifespan” (養其天年), conducting in-depth research into the fundamental nature and characteristics of human ageing processes and population ageing in Hong Kong, as well as the methods for maintaining physical health, longevity and a youthful physique.
In terms of professional services, Professor Peng believes that the essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) lies in treating illnesses and saving lives, and when a condition is deemed incurable, it reflects a lack of proper technique. He also emphasises the importance of TCM thinking, which values observation, listening and smelling, inquiry and palpation; focuses on the core pathogenesis; and prioritises the safety and flexibility of medication use. Professor Peng has been personally involved in frontline treatment during outbreaks of major infectious diseases, including SARS, avian influenza and COVID-19, saving countless lives while also accumulating rich academic and clinical experience.
Leveraging on his expertise in respiratory medicine, Professor Peng has demonstrated his strong passion for public service. During the pandemic, he collaborated with other experts to explore the potential of Chinese medicine, led the formulation of the Hong Kong Novel Coronavirus Infection Chinese Medicine Diagnosis and Treatment Plan (《香港新型冠狀病毒感染中醫診療方案》), helped to establish a telemedicine centre at HKBU to develop and promote remote medical consultation services, and personally treated patients at the Kai Tak Community Isolation Facility using Chinese medicine geriatric and warm disease theories. He also compiled relevant clinical cases and published the monograph Selected Medical Cases of COVID-19 (《2019冠狀病毒病醫案選粹》), which offers invaluable references for the prevention and treatment of epidemics and geriatric diseases in Chinese medicine, as well as for the development and care practices at The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong.
In terms of scientific research achievements, Professor Peng and his team have developed and launched a new drug and obtained two invention patents. He has also received four research accolades from the China Association of Chinese Medicine and provincial/ministerial-level bodies, published four academic monographs and more than 60 journal publications. He has been a member of several national-level Chinese medicine teams and has led and participated in national and provincial projects funded by the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Development Fund, the National Basic Research Programme of China (973 Programme) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Professor Peng holds positions in several professional associations, actively contributing his insights and experience to advance TCM. Dedicated to promoting the integration of Chinese and Western medicine, he has played a pivotal role in establishing a high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centred medical system.
In recognition of his outstanding clinical performance and dedication to Chinese medicine, Professor Peng was honoured by HKBU as the Most Admired Chinese Medical Practitioner (最美中醫) in 2022 and with the School Performance Award in Service in 2024.
